AWAKE. ALERT. AWARE.

Sometimes, we find ourselves staying awake when we should be asleep because of worry, responsibility, or even something meaningful.

But staying awake isn’t just about sleep. It’s about how we live, how aware we are, how we relate to others, and how present we are to the world around us.

Whether it’s by circumstance or choice, there are moments when we’re called to be truly alert, not just going through the motions but paying attention. It’s in those moments that we notice what really matters, respond with care, and recognise God in the ordinary.

One way to live this out is through mindfulness and attentiveness.

Jesus showed us how. In the story of the Widow’s Mite, while others focused on the large gifts of the wealthy, he noticed the poor widow and saw the true value of her offering.

Time and again, Jesus notices, cares, and responds, and we’re invited to do the same.

Being present isn’t always easy. Life gets busy, we rush and get distracted, and before we know it, the day slips by.

But living well means being awake to each moment, whether it’s a quiet talk, a quiet pause, or a small moment of relief in a difficult day.

For young people, especially, it can be as simple as putting the phone aside, really listening, and not rushing through life. Pay attention to your family, friendships, choices, and the little moments shaping who you are.

To be mindful is to notice the here and now. Like someone managing pain, learning to appreciate even small moments of relief, we too can learn to pause, notice, and be grateful.

It is about intentional living. We don’t have to wait for a crisis to happen before we reflect on what truly matters. We can do that now.

Are we making time for the people we love?
Are we showing appreciation?
Or are distractions from what truly counts taking over?

Let’s stay awake and check in with ourselves.

Maybe it means slowing down.
Reaching out.
Letting go.
Or simply noticing the small, good things in each day.

We don’t have to change everything at once. We just need to start paying attention, right here, right now, and choose to live each day with greater awareness and purpose.
