WHAT’S THE PRICE OF WINNING?

This is a question every child should ask, every parent should be able to answer and every teacher should endeavour to teach.

There are many prices of winning just as there are many stories behind every win and many factors that drive each win.

For the sake of this essay, let’s use the life-transforming story of Dr Ben Carson’s as a case study.

His price of winning was in reading!

Ben Carson’s story charts his struggles in overcoming life difficulties and how he conquered them to become a renowned neurosurgeon who performed the first successful separation of conjoined twins. These struggles are chronicles from childhood poor academic performance, poverty, single-parent household and low self-esteem. His life took a dramatic change after his Mum made a decisive decision to limit him from watching Television and compelled him to read two library books a week. From there, he developed his love for studying, gradually improved in academics and broadened his life perspectives.

Ben Carson’s story evidenced two major characters in his price of winning. An intentional Mum who fought a path of greatness for her son. And a resilient son who obeyed his mother and believed in himself to push his life beyond his limitations.

Every child has potential and every parent has the responsibility to nurture this potential to its fullest.

Success is no accident. It comes to those who understand it, who can explain it and who can work it out.
