History has it that the Nigeria nationalists accentuated the differences between the various ethnic groups during their colonial administration. 62 years now, the challenges of National UNITY are still daunting.
Nigeria as a nation has been turbulent with politics characterised by tribalism, regionalism and religious sentiments. The quest for national UNITY has been the most prevalent agenda of all government of Nigeria since independence. It is the sublime pedestal for a unified direction and a constructive march to nationhood.
Embracing our diversity, celebrating our differences, peaceful co existence, equality and oneness, must be relayed through every chanel of media, more importantly, by sensitization of the now generation through the school system.
Our education system, from playgroup, primary school, through secondary school to university level must pursue a systematic and strategic indoctrination of Nigerians on the uncompromising obligation of UNITY in diversity in Nigeria.
Today at RQS, we remember the last line of our National Anthem ‘One nation bound in freedom, peace and UNITY’. And the phrase ‘to defend her UNITY’ in the National Pledge. Our royal pupils have demonstrated, as a drama, the saying ‘United we stand and divided we fall’, to embolden UNITY and collaboration.
A UNITY born out of harmony, a UNITY born out of diversities, a UNITY born out of common experience and the desire to be one united nation. We need this UNITY first, we need Nigeria before other contending needs that we fight for, otherwise, we are bound to fail as a nation!
Happy 62 years Nigeria. 2023 presents another opportunity for us. May the labour of our heroes past never be in vain, Amen.
