THE BEAUTY IN DIVERSITYThere lived a young boy named Aiden in the Island of Maldives. He loved learning about different cultures. His parents were from different racial backgrounds – his mother was of African descent, and his father was of Asian descent. Aiden cherished this unique blend of cultures. One day, Aiden’s school announced a cultural fair. Excited, Aiden decided to participate and share his family’s rich history. He gathered traditional clothing, recipes, and artefacts from both sides of his family, eager to share his knowledge with his classmates. On the day of the fair, the school gymnasium was filled with booths representing various cultures. Aiden’s booth stood out with its vibrant decorations and delicious aroma of traditional dishes. He wore an outfit that combined elements from both his African and Asian heritage. As students and teachers visited his booth, Aiden explained the significance of each item and shared stories about his culture as shared by his grandparents. One of his classmates, Mia, asked, “Aiden, how do you feel about having parents from different races?”Aiden smiled warmly. “I feel lucky, Mia. I get to learn and experience the best of both worlds. My family has taught me to appreciate diversity and see the beauty in our differences.” Mia nodded thoughtfully. “That’s really cool, Aiden. I think it’s amazing how you embrace both cultures.”At the end of the fair, the principal announced that Aiden’s booth had won the award for the most informative and engaging presentation. Aiden’s heart swelled with joy as he accepted the award, surrounded by his friends and family.“Thank you,” Aiden said, his voice filled with emotions. “This award means a lot to me, but what means even more is the opportunity to share my heritage with all of you. I hope we can all continue to celebrate and embrace our cultural differences because that’s what makes our world so beautiful.”The gymnasium erupted in applause, and Aiden felt a sense of belonging and acceptance that he would carry with him for the rest of his life. He knew that his unique racial background was not just a characteristic but a source of strength and pride. We must always wear the garments of our cultural pride by embracing our culture fully, exhibiting it confidently, and promoting it profoundly. We must also appreciate other people’s culture, respect it, and promote it without segregation. By so doing, we can be the Aiden in our different communities and use our heritage to develop self-esteem, advance mutual respect, promote unity, and improve the sense of belonging amongst people in our communities. I am a black African from the Igbo tribe of Nigeria. I am culturally aware of my roots, and I pledge to preserve it as much as I can. I urge every child to do the same and every parent to encourage and support their children in that regard.Chikaima Zita Unachukwu
