A NATION. A PRAYER. A LESSON.

Yesterday, during our family prayer time, it was Chizzy’s turn to lead. We usually take turns, and whoever leads reads a prayer from Powerful Prayer Book by Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, before saying the main prayer.

As she flipped through the pages, she stopped at Prayer for Nigeria in Distress. She was about to read it when I asked her to choose another prayer.

Why? she asked.

Because I’ve been saying that prayer since I was a child. I answered.

She quietly chose another prayer and continued.

But afterwards, I felt uneasy. Why did I stop her? Why did I react so strongly to that particular prayer? Yes, it was a regular prayer in church then (I don’t know if they still say it) but is it enough reason to stop her?

As I reflected, I realized what was behind my response. Deep down, I felt, This prayer doesn’t work.

For years, generations of believers have prayed for Nigeria. We have prayed for peace, justice, good leadership, security, and national transformation. Yet many of the same challenges remain. Perhaps somewhere deep inside, disappointment had slowly become doubt.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the lesson was not about whether prayer works. The lesson was about the condition of the human heart when answers seem delayed.

Throughout Scripture, God’s people often waited years, even generations, to see His promises fulfilled. Yet they were called to keep praying and keep trusting.

Unlike me, Chizzy approached that prayer without cynicism or frustration. She simply saw a need and was willing to pray. Her innocence challenged me.

There is a lesson for everyone, especially for young Christians.

Do not let delayed answers convince you that God is not listening.

Keep praying. Keep believing. Sometimes, the greatest danger is not an unanswered prayer but giving up on it.

That evening, God used a simple moment with my daughter to reveal a hidden discouragement in my heart.

Are you discouraged in your situation or in the condition of Nigeria?, may this message bring you renewed hope. The faith of a child is sometimes God’s way of reminding us to believe again.
