Roy Scranton in one of his books on climate change titled “We’re doomed, now what”, gave a despairing analysis of the future, yet he refuses to let go of hope believing that hope will overcome. Yes, we can not pretend or deny that there’s a high rate of deteriorating moral standards in this generation, which looms danger for the future generation. Hence, we need to face it head-on, with all hands on deck to revive this and achieve the change we desire.
That was the essence of the 39 articles previously written on the topic, Moral Instruction and Character Class. No doubt, a person’s character is the foundation of other behavioural traits needed in building a better and stronger inter personal relationship for a happier world. Hence, character and moral values are an amalgamation of other traits and the foundation of all other topics explored earlier.
The reason we gather in church, mosque, and other places of worship is because we believe the order and the dictates of our religion. No matter what bad news we receive, no matter how painful life could be, no matter what difficulties or set backs we have to deal with, we have faith in our belief and our hopes are fulfilled each day. The hope that God loves us, God is with us, God cares for His people, and will never abandon us.
Thus, we anticipate a better life as we practice our religion and faith. In the same way, we are bound by this belief system, we are also bound by character to portray the right disposition in our private and public life while seeking happiness, fulfilment, prosperity and stability in life.
Our character binds us to our behaviours, our attitudes, and our conduct. We are all called to embrace a character that is bound to a life of positivity and credence against one that bounds us to a life of negativity and antagonism.
This calls for self-examination. What is that character that bounds you up and gives you an identity?
It could be good or bad character, one made public or a private one.
Are you bound up in sinfulness, thinking that you are not good enough before God and you suffer terrible scruples about your shortcomings?
Are you bound up in an addiction of some kind like alcoholism, drugs, porn and many others?
Are you bound up in low self-esteem, thinking you can’t measure up, wrapped up in a sense of your unworthiness, full of quiet despair and self-pity?
Are you bound up in terrible anger at God, at yourselves, at others, at your circumstances, at your environment, and so on, that it eats you away?
Are you bound up in a dead routine, doing the same thing day after day, feeling trapped, stifled, and unfulfilled?
Are you bound up by hypocrisy, anger, bitterness, resentment, greed, cheating, envy, indecency, fraud, rape, thuggery, and many other vices.
What bad character keeps you from being your best, being fully alive, fully authentic, and being the kind of person that you should be?
To the young ones, the juvenile minds, and the unguided youths, you all need to understand the importance of good character and apply it in all your walks in life.
Character traits like honesty, courage, patience, trust, commitment, loyalty, and many others shouldn’t be traded for anything, no matter how tough the going gets. The decision has to come from within you. Life is all about ethics and values, and a person is judged not only by competence, intelligence, or special talents but by his aggregate moral qualities, determined by character. Definitely, with good character, one can develop a winning personality and excel in all endeavours.
According to Aristotle, it is our choice of good or evil that determines our character, not our opinion about good or evil. Your character is your makeup and your personality.
It is your strength and an achievement on its own. In academics, a first-class is awarded by assessment of both learning and character.
Character is a nature that must be nurtured through culture and discipline. It is the most essential ingredient in the pursuit of excellence.
