Moral Instruction and Character Class. Episode 30: Tolerance

Apostle Joshua Selman, in one of his great teachings, spoke about tolerance with some insightful references.
He said, “There are many people today who left their destiny helpers when they shouldn’t have left.” Speaking further, he said, “That uncle may be harsh, that Aunty may be harsh, it looks like they always show tribalism and sentiments. But as harsh as that treatment is, that is the greatest university that can make a leader out of you. ”

Tolerance is a great virtue, whether it comes by tolerating someone else’s opinion, enduring anothers behaviour, accommodating adverse environmental conditions, respecting the belief or practice of others, or having the fortitude to bear harsh conditions. Tolerance is acceptance. Accepting others’ beliefs, actions, religion, ethnicity, custom, nationality, and having the capacity and willingness to endure and manage unpleasant situations. Tolerance is temporal, but its fruits yield permanent benefits, and it is imperative for every human being to possess the character of tolerance. Every child needs to be raised to imbibe the values in the virtue of tolerance.

From an honest assessment, can we say that virtues like tolerance still exist in this day and age? Do the young ones believe in the nobility of the process? Do they understand the benefits of waiting and enduring? Are they aware that there is an honour that comes with tolerance? We are living in an audacious generation that has an abberated view of life. A generation where children and youths are not interested in the history, story, and pain of great people. They are more concerned about compressing the number of years in their pursuit of success and skipping processes in their quest to get rich quickly.

Pain, failure, and disappointment are indispensable ingredients in the path of success, and tolerance is the tool to navigate them. One who runs around looking for comfort where perseverance is required is weak and one who fails to endure and tolerate when the situation demands is even weaker. Some circumstances in life demand tolerance and patience, but many make the big mistake of leaving from a situation where tolerance is required. Oftentimes, those who come from a place of tolerance are usually those who end up being helped, blessed, or empowered for lasting success.

From the wealth of experience of the wise, we are taught that the very place of pain is the place of treasure. The making of gold is a good example. We are constantly reminded that success does not usually come from that rosy path but from the path of patience and tolerance. Children who hurry to be in the comfort zone could miss their treasured target. If the isrealites had left Egypt earlier than they did, they wouldn’t
have gotten the gold they used to build the tabernacle.

Like the bible says in Genesis 18:10, “…according to the time of life.” This infers that life is a process that is determined by time and tolerance is needed in wait of time.

Tolerance is a great gift. There is a lesson only tolerance can teach. The level of tolerance of a person determines the level of his confidence. People who lack tolerance are risks to life. There is a perspective about life they lack, which is dangerous to growth. Tolerance gives stamina and a balanced understanding of life. Not careless tolerance but tolerance that’s guided by vision.

We live in a generation that has disrespect for mastery and result, a generation that believes in quick results. It is said that the body of champions have scary scars that are covered by their shirts, and the glamour of the palace makes it look like there are no pains in it.

It is pertinent to note that tolerance as a permissive attitude does not mean permitting without limits. It is the ability to deal with things, to accept others regardless, and to adjust to uncomfortable situations. Tolerance is said to be the highest result of education, which means that it inculcates all manners of learning. Parents and teachers are saddled with the responsibility of raising tolerant children who are equipped to take up tolerance when the situation demands.
